A practical, doula-approved packing list for your hospital stay — no fluff, just essentials that will truly make a difference.
When to Pack
Have your bag ready by 36 weeks. Labor can start unexpectedly, and you do not want to be scrambling when contractions begin!
For Labor
- Comfortable robe — easier than a hospital gown for walking
- Grippy socks or slippers
- Hair ties and headband
- Lip balm — hospital air is dry
- Phone charger with extra-long cord
- Massage tools — tennis balls, massage oil (learn about Natural Pain Management Techniques)
- Birth affirmation cards
- Playlist and portable speaker
- Snacks for early labor and recovery
- Pillows from home (in colorful pillowcases)
For After Birth
- Nursing bras (2-3 comfortable ones) — see our Breastfeeding Basics Guide
- Comfortable underwear you do not mind ruining
- Going-home outfit — loose, comfortable, maternity-size

- Glasses/contacts if you wear them
- Nursing pads
For Baby
- Going-home outfit — 0-3 months size
- Swaddle blanket
- Car seat — installed and inspected
- Hat for warmth
For Your Partner

- Cash for vending machines
- Camera (though phones work great)
Important Documents
- Insurance cards and ID
- Hospital pre-registration paperwork
- Birth plan copies (3-4)
- Pediatrician contact information
What to Leave Home
Skip the jewelry, excessive electronics, and anything valuable. The hospital provides diapers, wipes, pads, and mesh underwear — take advantage of these supplies!
