Learn to recognize the natural signals your body sends as you prepare for labor and delivery.
Understanding Your Body's Signals
As your due date approaches, your body begins an amazing transformation, preparing both physically and hormonally for the incredible journey of birth. Understanding these natural signals can help you feel more confident and ready for labor. Here are five key signs that your body and baby are getting ready for birth.
Sign 1: Lightening (Baby Drops)
Also called "engagement" or "the baby dropping," this happens when your baby descends into your pelvis, typically 2-4 weeks before labor for first-time mothers, though it can happen just before labor starts for those who have given birth before.
What You Will Notice:
- Your belly appears lower and more forward
- Easier breathing as baby moves away from your diaphragm
- Increased pelvic pressure and discomfort
- More frequent urination as baby presses on your bladder
Sign 2: Increased Braxton Hicks Contractions
These "practice contractions" become more frequent and noticeable as labor approaches. They help prepare your uterus for the real thing. Learning natural pain management techniques now will help you cope when real contractions begin.
Key Differences from Labor Contractions:
- Irregular in timing and duration
- Usually painless or mildly uncomfortable
- Stop with movement or position changes
- Do not increase in intensity over time
Sign 3: Cervical Changes
Your cervix begins to soften (ripen), thin out (efface), and may start to dilate. Your healthcare provider can check these changes at your appointments.
- Effacement: Cervix thins from thick to paper-thin (measured in percentages)
- Dilation: Cervix opens from 0 to 10 centimeters
- Position: Cervix moves from posterior to anterior
Sign 4: Loss of Mucus Plug / Bloody Show
The mucus plug that has sealed your cervix throughout pregnancy may come out as a thick, jelly-like discharge, sometimes tinged with blood ("bloody show").
- Can happen days to hours before labor
- May come out all at once or gradually
- Pink, brown, or slightly bloody is normal
Sign 5: Nesting Instinct
Many mothers experience a sudden burst of energy and an overwhelming urge to clean, organize, and prepare their home for baby. This psychological sign often indicates labor is near. Read our guide on nesting and preparing your home.
- Sudden energy surge despite pregnancy fatigue
- Strong urge to clean and organize
- Desire to complete preparations for baby — make sure your hospital bag is packed!
